The main activities of Anatolia Foundation were based in the Kars Province of North East Turkey between 2006-2012 and funded by The Christensen Fund, CA, USA. An additional Small Grant was received from UNDP GEF Trust Fund. They were well received by the locals and also publicized internationally for the revival of the endangered ancient grain Emmer (Triticum dicoccum). They continue today under the hospices of local farmer NGOs to bring alternative income to village families.

Kars Province is located at the mountainous Northeast region of Turkey, bordering Armenia.
WHY KARS?
The territory of Kars Province contains key biodiversity Areas with 11 Important Plant Areas and 13 Important Bird Areas. The flora and fauna are seriously endangered, mainly due to intensive animal grazing, the use of agricultural pesticides and the loss of centuries old traditions, as the population shifts from rural to urban areas.
